Proposed Project #3 - Wind Energy System

The majority of windmills introduced in Africa are high-tech and very expensive. These mills are generally used for pumping water, and in some cases for producing electricity.  In coastal and mountain areas, harnessing the abundant wind energy for irrigation is an efficient way to fight droughts, and increase food production.

In Africa, wind power could play a useful role for water supply and irrigation (wind pumps) and electrical generation (wind turbines or generators).  Wind power is a mature renewable energy technology that could be used for small and large-scale electricity generation.  There is substantial potential for deployment of this technology in Africa, especially along the coastal and mountain areas.                                      Wind Power for Water photo(right)
